What is The difference Between Therapy Group and A Support Group

Both therapy groups and support groups offer valuable spaces for connection and healing, but they serve different purposes.

A therapy group is led by a licensed mental health professional and focuses on clinical goals such as emotional processing, developing coping skills, and improving mental health. These groups are typically more structured and may follow a specific therapeutic approach (like CBT, DBT, or trauma-informed care). Members are guided to explore patterns, share vulnerably, and engage in meaningful feedback—all within a confidential, ethically-bound setting.

A support group, on the other hand, is often facilitated by a peer or trained community leader and centers on shared life experiences. These groups provide emotional validation, encouragement, and a sense of community, especially around topics like grief, identity, caregiving, or chronic illness. Support groups tend to be more flexible and less clinical, creating space for open sharing and mutual support.

In short:

  • Therapy groups focus on healing through professional guidance.

  • Support groups focus on connection through shared experience.

Both can be powerful—just in different ways. If you're unsure which one is right for you, we’re happy to help you decide.
